War On Fat Kids

April 14, 2008

This is great news and is long overdue. Schools should not only be the safest places for children but should also be the healthiest. I would like to see a comparison of lifestyles between the obese children of age 11. It may throw up some interesting social issues. I wonder how many of them participate in activities away from school? Or who regularly go for walks to the park etc. Schools can provide the healthiest meals on Earth but if the children are being fed crap at home and are not exercising when away from school i fear its an uphill battle. I would hazard a guess that most obese 11 year olds have a bad diet at home and do little if any exercise. They probably sit in front of the TV or PC for hours on end with their parents leaving them to it. What we need is more education for parents and more out of school activities for children. Now don’t get me wrong i think a lot of it is down to lazy parents, as there are literally dozens of activities/clubs children can take part in after school and on the weekends. Its all to easy to know your child is safe and quiet in front of a TV/PC and to pass snacks into them now and again. But in the long run you are only risking your child’s health.

  1. I wanted to mention as a father of five. I’ve witness the poor value of foods within the school system. I agree and believe that there should be more serious guidelines structure to assure healthier choices. I’ve written a few articles on the subject of childhood obesity.
